About Kilsaran and CarbonCure

We at Kilsaran are always thinking about the future with strategy and innovation in mind. As part of our overall strategy on sustainability, we have announced the signing of a partnership agreement with Carbon Cure, using the first technology of its kind in Ireland and the UK.

We have agreed to a phased introduction of Carbon Cure, for which the rollout will follow a trial period of production at two Kilsaran ready-mixed concrete plants in Dublin. The product will be trialled initially with a limited number of customers during 2022.

CarbonCure is a state-of-the-art technology that introduces recycled CO₂, emitted through industry, into ready-mixed concrete to reduce its carbon footprint, without compromising performance. Once injected, the CO₂ undergoes a mineralization process and becomes permanently embodied in the concrete.

Commenting on the announcement, Keith Goodwin, Group Technical Manager with Kilsaran has said that ‘the introduction of Carbon Cure will enable Kilsaran to offer their customers concrete that is not only better for the environment with a reduced carbon footprint, but with increased long-term durability’. Kilsaran has long been a leader in environmental best practice, having been the first concrete producer in Ireland to introduce GGBS, a by-product from steel production as a partial cement replacement over 20 years ago.

Goodwin advises that the use of Carbon Cure can effectively reduce the CO₂ associated with a typical delivery of concrete by 120 kg, from which there is great environmental benefit on a construction project. *** The project represents a €1m investment by Kilsaran, and will create an additional 8 jobs in the areas of project support and R&D.

This initiative is only one of a number of measures Kilsaran have introduced as part of its 2022 Corporate Sustainability Policy.
