The Project
Spire Healthcare opened a £60m flagship hospital in Nottingham. The hospital was built with extensive input from consultants, staff and patients alike.
The state-of-the-art facility offers patients a wide range of integrated surgical, medical and diagnostic services that will meet the needs of Nottingham and its surrounding areas for years to come.
The Product
This project used a diverse collection of paving styles and finishes comprising of Kilsaran’s Inish Curragh Gold tumbled, Kilsaran’s Mellifont Natural Antiqued, our Pembroke Slate concrete paving and a granite sett was carefully selected to fulfill the overall look and feel on both a practical and design sense.
The Process
The entrance to the hospital required a hard landscaped area that could accommodate a variety of vehicular and pedestrian traffic while remaining attractive and being clearly identifiable as the single entrance into the hospital site.
Paving providers Hardscape helped source a variety of suitable materials for both pedestrian and vehicular use. This resulted in a design which used alternative materials to complement the building and create a high quality entrance plaza to the development.

The Project
This scheme, carried out under TII’s High Speed Road Pavement Renewals Framework, involved the removal and replacement of almost 185,000 square metres of surface course on a 7.3km stretch of the M50 between Junction 14 at Leopardstown and Junction 17 at Shankill where the M50 and M11 merge.
The Product
This involved laying approximately 18,000 tonnes of Stone Mastic Asphalt surface course in accordance with the TII Specification for Road Works.
In order to achieve the most durable surface possible, Kilsaran Roadsurfacing and Contracting and our client – Jons Civil Engineering Ltd., in conjunction with the client decided that it was desirable to lay the surface course in echelon.
The Process
Echelon involves laying the material in one pass across the full width of the motorway carriageway.
In this instance it entailed laying with three of our Vogele paving machines side by side. This eliminates the need for cold longitudinal joints which is the most common location of pavement failure. No joints means no path through which water can pass, eliminating a possible weak spot from the start.
As the M50 is Ireland’s busiest roads with traffic volumes in excess of 100,000 vehicles per day, the project was carried out during night time possessions of the motorway between 10pm and 6 am. In excess of 1km of motorway carriageway was laid in each night shift.
To achieve this our site team of 30 people took delivery of the material from a transport fleet of 30 trucks from two asphalt plants to ensure that paving could run continuously for the entire shift.

The Kilsaran Road Surfacing Team is working with Balfour Beatty Ireland, reconstructing and improving taxilanes and aircraft stands as part of the DAA’s program of airport campus enhancement, which will facilitate the growth in passenger numbers that Dublin Airport is currently experiencing.
Our road surfacing team constructed these areas consisting of the placement of the stone subbase, and a pavement consisting of 220mm of bituminous material on 300mm of Cement Bound Granular Material (CBGM).
The photographs show the Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) surface course being placed in echelon which ensures that all longitudinal joints in the surface course are hot, enhancing the durability of the final surface. This phase of the works involved placing 6500 sq. m of surface course in one shift.
Kilsaran are also supplied Lean Mix Concrete and PQ Concrete to this project in the Airport.
